Two schools on one site, sharing common functions. This was the challenge in building a new middle school next to an existing elementary school in the coastal community of Aviara Oaks. The core of S+W’s successful solution? Simplicity. Maintaining the integrity of both campuses, the Architects developed a shared linear commons area that provides amenities for both campuses, yet separates the middle from the elementary school. Shared functions within the Commons include Food Services, large group activity spaces, Administrative Services, a Learning Resource Center and a Multipurpose Building. Materials and scale of the project are coordinated for continuity in design with the existing school and the surrounding residential community. Aviara Oaks Middle School is twice the size of the existing elementary school — yet construction cost for the new project was accomplished for less than the cost of the original elementary school constructed 10 years earlier!
